The five-year BA/MAT program enables you to complete your bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and secondary teaching certificate (grades 7 through 12) within five years. In your first year, you’ll select a major, such as biology, English, history, Spanish or mathematics, which will prepare you to teach that subject on the secondary school level. We’ll teach you how to plan lessons, manage a classroom and enhance your understanding of teaching and learning in a contemporary school setting.
As a freshman, you will begin your BA/MAT program with ED 140 Introduction to Public Education. This 1-credit course introduces you to the teaching profession and helps you to make choices about course work along with your major.
In your sophomore year, you will take two more courses in education: foundational courses in diversity and philosophy of education. All of these early courses provide opportunities to build relationships with MAT faculty and become further involved in our School of Education events and clubs. At the end of your sophomore year, you will have a formal review of your overall academic work and meet with education faculty to review your status. So long as your grades are good and your desire to teach is still strong, you will be allowed to continue through the BA/MAT program.
During your junior and senior years, you will spend time every semester in public schools with classroom teachers as well as increasing your course work in education. You’ll automatically transition to graduate school after you earn your bachelor’s degree, and your final year will be spent interning at an area school full-time, under the supervision of an on-site mentor and a School of Education faculty member.
Teaching certification and licensure is regulated by each state. Connecticut participates in the NASDTEC Interstate Compact (NASDTEC.net). States that participate in this compact agree to accept the planned program of study of graduates in any of the states that are part of that compact. Therefore, whether you are an out of state applicant or in-state, you can become a certified teacher wherever you want to teach.
Earn your master’s degree without breaking the bank
In the 5-year MAT program, you will experience significant cost savings while pursuing your graduate degree. Your first graduate semester begins immediately after you complete your undergraduate degree with a 7-week summer semester. This is the only semester you will be responsible for paying the full tuition and fees. During the next semester, you will intern in a school while attending evening courses. This internship enables you to attend tuition-free, paying only fees for the fall. Since you will be continuing your internship as part of your schedule in the spring, you are charged for only half of the tuition along with the fees.

Teaching beyond the classroom
With his first year of teaching history at Pomperaug High School in Southbury, Connecticut under his belt, Michael Syrotiak ’15, MAT ’16 feels energized, and is moving beyond basic history lessons. In addition to working with athletics and school social events, Syrotiak has designed a course titled Conversations on Race. “Cultural sensitivity is something incredibly important in education,” he said. “Moreover, it’s a subject I am very passionate about.”Read more

BA/MAT Five-Year Program in Secondary Education
The secondary education program is designed to prepare the teacher candidate with strong teaching skills and a depth of content knowledge in the discipline they wish to teach. Students interested in secondary education must select a major from among the following: biology, English, history, mathematics or Spanish.
Central to candidates’ professional studies are undergraduate service-based courses (ED 341L, ED 342L, ED 409L, SPED 452L) in which candidates gain 80 hours of hands-on experience, and the full-year graduate internship/residency experience in partner schools.
The following courses meet both the University Curriculum requirements and the Connecticut State Department of Education’s general education requirements. A grade of “B” or better is required in these courses.

The 5-Year Master of Arts in Teaching program welcomes all freshman and sophomore students who have an interest in becoming a teacher. When you apply to Quinnipiac, you simply state that you are interested in becoming a teacher, or you want to explore your options to become a teacher. Once you indicate that teaching might be for you, our faculty and advisers will help you to choose the courses you need. There is no limit on the number of students we enroll in the 5-Year MAT program. In the spring of your sophomore year, the School of Education faculty members review your grade point average and request an interview with you as part of your continuation in the 5-year program. The full list of requirements that you must complete to remain in the 5-Year MAT program are listed below.
A preferred 3.0 minimum overall undergraduate GPA (from all colleges and universities attended) for 45 credits of course work with a subject area major or appropriate interdisciplinary major (applicants with overall GPAs below 2.67 will not be considered).
Provide evidence of one of the following basic skills assessments:
Praxis Core Mathematics, Reading, and Writing Tests, SAT, ACT
At least two written recommendations from individuals who have recent knowledge (within the last two years) of the applicant's suitability as a prospective educator, including one from a college instructor.
A written essay completed on-site that meets program standards.
A formal interview during which the applicant is expected to demonstrate: an ability to communicate clearly; a demeanor appropriate to the teaching profession; and a maturity and attitude necessary to meet the demands of the MAT program.
Effective July 1, 2010, Connecticut law requires all teacher candidates to undergo a criminal background check prior to being placed in a public school setting for field study, internship and student teaching. Because a clinical experience is an integral part of each semester, failure to abide by this law will make an applicant ineligible for admission to the program. The School of Education has procedures in place to assist candidates in obtaining the background check. The cost of the background check is the responsibility of the teacher candidate.
